A Story-Driven Wedding at Riverside on the Potomac in Northern Virginia
This wedding at Riverside on the Potomac was a perfect example of why I love photographing weddings in Northern Virginia, a day that felt relaxed, personal, and rooted in real connection. As a documentary wedding photographer, my focus is always on preserving how the day actually felt, not staging moments for the sake of a photo.
An intimate ceremony shaped by the moment
The day began with plans for an outdoor ceremony overlooking the river, but when a sudden storm rolled in, the celebration shifted indoors — and in many ways, became even more meaningful. The historic house where the wedding party got ready set the tone for the day, with quiet moments unfolding naturally as rain fell outside. While guests gathered on the porch, the ceremony space was transformed, and by the time vows were exchanged, the rain had softened and light streamed through the slats of the barn. The intimacy of the setting brought everyone closer, and there wasn’t a dry eye in the room as the couple said their vows.
Why they chose Riverside on the Potomac
What drew them to Riverside on the Potomac was the feeling of being tucked away, surrounded by landscape and scenery that felt quiet, open, and completely their own. The property offered the rustic charm they loved, with an old farmhouse and barn that felt timeless and welcoming without sacrificing beauty or space for a larger celebration. Natural light filled the venue throughout the day, and as evening set in, the soft lighting created a warm, intimate atmosphere.
One of the most meaningful spaces for the bride was the lower level of the main barn, a former stable that had been transformed into a lounge area. Having grown up around horses, it felt like a personal and familiar space, and it naturally became a gathering place throughout the weekend. It ultimately hosted their rehearsal dinner, grounding the celebration in a space that felt both nostalgic and deeply personal.
“I basically lived in a stable with my horses when I was younger, so incorporating that space into our wedding felt really personal.”
Throughout the day, I stepped in with gentle guidance when it helped things flow smoothly and stepped back when moments were unfolding on their own. When plans shifted, there was space to slow down, stay present, and allow the day to become what it needed to be resulting in images that feel honest, grounded, and true to the experience.
