A Greek Orthodox Wedding at Saint Sophia Cathedral and District Winery in Washington DC
Cassandra and Dimitri’s wedding day moved between grandeur and joy so naturally you almost forgot how much intention went into every detail.
Their wedding began at Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Washington DC before guests gathered along the waterfront at District Winery for an evening reception overlooking the Anacostia River.
Getting Ready in Washington DC
The morning started slowly, with natural light pouring through the hotel windows as everyone settled into the rhythm of the day. There was a calmness to the morning that carried through everything quiet moments with family, final details being adjusted, and the growing anticipation before the ceremony.
Cassandra spent the morning surrounded by her bridesmaids and family while Dimitri got ready in a nearby suite with his closest friends and family. Some of the most meaningful moments from a wedding day often happen here, before the timeline fully takes over.
The Ceremony at Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral
Saint Sophia is one of those spaces that does the work for you as a photographer. The gold iconography, the vaulted ceilings, the warm candlelight, it creates a backdrop that makes every moment feel significant. Cassandra came down the aisle into all of it, and Dimitri's face when he saw her said everything that needed to be said.
Greek Orthodox ceremonies are rich with ritual and meaning, and this one was no exception. The crowning, the processional, the family surrounding them, it was beautiful and it was theirs.

A Waterfront Reception at District Winery
After the ceremony, guests made their way to District Winery for a waterfront reception overlooking the Anacostia River.
District Winery has a completely different atmosphere from Saint Sophia Cathedral in the best possible way. Where the ceremony felt grand and traditional, the reception felt modern, warm, and full of movement. The combination made the entire wedding day feel layered and personal instead of overly formal.
As the sun started to drop over the waterfront, guests gathered for cocktails, conversations, and views of the river before moving inside for the reception. The space at District Winery works beautifully for weddings because it manages to feel clean and contemporary while still holding a lot of energy once the dance floor fills up.
One of my favorite parts of the evening was watching how effortlessly Cassandra and Dimitri moved through it all together. There was never a moment where they seemed pulled away from the experience of the day. They stayed present with each other, with their families, and with every person who came to celebrate them.
The reception itself was filled with emotional toasts, nonstop dancing, and the kind of joyful atmosphere that keeps building as the night goes on. By the time the dance floor opened fully, the entire room felt alive.
For couples planning a District Winery wedding in Washington DC, it is easy to see why the venue has become such a sought-after waterfront wedding location. The combination of modern architecture, natural light, river views, and proximity to the city creates an experience that feels uniquely DC while still feeling intimate.
A Washington DC Wedding Full of Tradition and Celebration
Cassandra and Dimitri’s wedding day balanced tradition, emotion, and celebration so naturally from beginning to end. From the historic atmosphere of Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral to the waterfront energy of District Winery, every part of the day felt deeply connected to the people surrounding them.
It was an honor to document a wedding that felt both visually stunning and genuinely personal at the same time.
