If you're looking for a unique location for family photos in Northern Virginia, the sunflower fields at Burnside Farms are one of my favorite seasonal options. Each summer, thousands of sunflowers bloom across the farm, creating a beautiful backdrop for family, maternity, couples, and children's portraits.

Located within easy driving distance of Warrenton, Fairfax, Haymarket, Gainesville, Ashburn, and much of Northern Virginia, Burnside Farms has become a favorite destination for families looking to capture the warmth and joy of summer.

As a Northern Virginia family photographer, I love locations that give children room to explore and families space to connect naturally. The sunflower fields offer both. Rather than focusing on stiff poses, my approach combines gentle guidance with authentic moments, creating images that feel relaxed, connected, and true to your family.

Why Burnside Farms is One of the Best Family Photo Locations in Northern Virginia

Choosing the right location can make a huge difference in how your family photos feel. Burnside Farms offers a combination of vibrant color, open space, and beautiful evening light that is difficult to find elsewhere in the region.

The sunflower fields are especially popular for:

  • Family photography sessions

  • Maternity portraits

  • Couples and engagement sessions

  • Milestone sessions

  • Children's portraits

Because the farm is so expansive, there is plenty of space for children to move, play, and interact naturally while still showcasing the beauty of the flowers.

What to Wear for Sunflower Family Photos

Sunflowers pair beautifully with warm, earthy tones and soft neutrals. Cream, tan, light denim, sage green, dusty blue, rust, and muted florals all complement the golden blooms without competing for attention.

The goal is not perfect coordination but creating a look that feels comfortable and cohesive. Some families choose a more polished style, while others embrace a relaxed summer look. Both photograph beautifully in the fields.

Since sessions take place on a working farm, comfortable shoes are recommended, especially for young children.

Can We Bring Our Dog?

Yes. Burnside Farms allows leashed dogs during sunflower season, making these sessions a wonderful option for families who want to include their pets.

As a dog-friendly photographer, I love helping families incorporate their dogs into a few portraits while still creating a variety of images throughout the session.

Do We Need Tickets for Burnside Farms?

Yes. Admission to Burnside Farms is purchased separately from your photography session. All guests entering the sunflower fields must have a valid admission ticket purchased directly through the farm.

Once your session is booked, I'll help guide you through timing and ticket selection so everything coordinates smoothly.

When Should We Schedule Sunflower Photos?

Sunflower season is one of the shortest photography seasons of the year. Bloom dates vary slightly depending on weather conditions, but the fields typically look their best for only a few weeks each summer.

For the most beautiful light, sunflower sessions are scheduled in the evening near sunset when the fields glow with warm golden tones.

More Than Just Sunflower Photos

Many families choose to make a full evening out of their visit to Burnside Farms. Beyond the sunflower fields, the farm often includes family-friendly activities, play areas, swings, games, and seasonal attractions that children enjoy exploring before or after a session.

This relaxed environment helps children settle in naturally and often leads to the genuine smiles and interactions that parents love most in their photographs.

Family Photography in Warrenton, Fairfax, and Northern Virginia

While sunflower sessions are only available for a limited time each summer, I photograph families throughout Northern Virginia year-round. Whether you're looking for sunflower fields, lavender farms, parks, open fields, or meaningful locations for your family, my goal is always the same: creating images that feel natural, connected, and authentic to your family.

Spring at Burnside Farms is pure magic. Every spring, more than 2 million tulips burst into bloom at Burnside Farms in Nokesville, Virginia, one of the largest tulip fields on the East Coast. Here’s how to plan your family photography session at this stunning Virginia destination and make the most of your visit.endless fields of tulips and daffodils, golden light, and the joy of little hands picking flowers. What Makes These Sessions Different?

Instead of posed, rushed photos, these 30-minute sessions are all about capturing the genuine joy and wonder of your family’s time at the farm. Whether it’s your child running through the flower fields, picking the perfect bloom, or enjoying a quiet moment together, I’ll be there to document it naturally. No stiff poses—just real, beautiful memories. We can still get a few posed photos of the group, but even these will have a more natural candid feel. Even if it’s your toddler obsessing over the gravel pile or the rocks on the paths, these are the fleeting memories that we overlook sometimes. My kids love the rocks.

Why Choose a Tulip Storytelling Session?

  • Your kids can be themselves no pressure, no forced smiles.

  • You get a mix of playful, candid moments and artistic details.

  • The session flows with your family’s natural rhythm.

  • No stress over perfect outfits just come as you are!

Tips for Your Visit to Burnside Farms

To make the most of your session (and your visit), here are a few tips:

  1. Get Your Tickets Early – Burnside Farms requires tickets, and they can sell out fast! Purchase them through their website, and follow their Instagram page to stay updated on bloom times and availability. Here is the link to their website https://www.burnsidefarms.com

If you plan on visiting the flower fields multiple times. Burnside Farms offers a yearly passport ticket. This is great and you can visit for both the Burnside Farms tulips and the Burnside Farms Sunflowers which are usually in late July. These passports do sell out every year, so check their site to see what they are offering.

  2. Be Ready for Unpredictable Weather – My family and I have been going since 2020, and we’ve had visits where the breeze was FREEZING and others where the girls were sweaty and hot. The fields can also be muddy, so wear layers and bring shoes you don’t mind getting a little dirty.

  3. Relax & Let the Kids Be Themselves – One of the best things about a storytelling session is that you don’t need the “perfect” outfits. Let your little ones dress comfortably so they can explore and enjoy the experience fully.

  4. Plan for Crowds – Weekdays tend to be less busy than weekends.

  5. Bring a Picnic – After your session, enjoy some downtime together with a picnic or a treat from the farm stand. Depending on the time you visit they often have food trucks. There is an area with jump pads and a play area for the kids to explore. This area also can make for great storytelling opportunities.
