What to Wear for Spring Family Photos in Northern Virginia

One of the most common questions I get from families before their session is "what should we wear?" It's a fair question, and honestly, my answer depends on something more important than color palettes or outfit coordination.

It depends on what kind of session you actually want.

First — What Kind of Session Are You Hoping For?

Before we get into outfit tips, let me ask you something: are you hoping for real, this-is-actually-us photos? Or are you hoping for a more polished, curated lifestyle look?

Both are completely valid. Both are beautiful. But they call for very different approaches. Being honest about which one you want will make your session so much better.

Route 1 — True Documentary: Wear What You Actually Wear

If you're booking a session because you want real, messy, true-to-life photos that feel like a Tuesday afternoon rather than a photoshoot — then my honest advice is this: wear what you actually wear.

Your kid's favorite dinosaur shirt. The dress your daughter refuses to take off. Dad's worn-in flannel. Mom's everyday jeans. Let them be 100% themselves — because that IS the photo.

Documentary sessions are about capturing your family as you actually are, not a styled version of you. The more comfortable and natural everyone feels, the better the images will be. Authenticity photographs beautifully every single time.

The only thing I'd suggest even for documentary sessions: avoid very large logos or graphics that might feel dated in ten years. Everything else? Wear what you love.

When True Documentary Really Shines

Documentary sessions work beautifully anywhere, but there are a few settings where they really come alive:

In-home sessions. This is documentary at its purest — your family in your actual space, doing your actual things. Morning routines, reading on the couch, kids playing on the floor, cooking together. The chaos, the light coming through your windows, the little details of your everyday life. These are the sessions people cry over ten years later because everything is so real and so true to that moment in time.

Playgrounds. Kids at a playground are completely in their element — running, climbing, laughing, ignoring you. That's exactly what you want in a documentary session. Some of my favorite images have come from just following kids around a playground and staying out of the way.

Your favorite family spaces. The coffee shop you go to every Saturday morning. The trail you walk every evening. The backyard where your kids spend every afternoon. Locations that have actual meaning to your family produce images that feel completely different from a generic park session because the joy is real, not performed.

Route 2 — Curated Lifestyle: Here's How to Style It

If you're hoping for a more polished, cohesive gallery coordinated outfits, intentional color palette, that beautiful lifestyle feel then styling does matter and it's worth putting some thought into. Here's exactly what I tell families who want that look.

Start with One Outfit and Build Around It

Pick one person's outfit first — usually mom's or the oldest child's — and build everyone else around it. You don't need to match. You need to coordinate. Think of it like putting together a room: you want the colors to feel like they belong together Once you have your anchor outfit, pull 2-3 colors from it and use those as your palette for everyone else. If you love coordinating sets, brands like Mini Boden do this beautifully go for it. The key is that the outfits feel intentional and cohesive rather than completely unrelated. There's no wrong way to get there. Disclaimer: If you love Matchy, matchy outfits- go for it! I’ve added a couple images below of how this has been done well and created beautiful galleries!

The Best Colors for Spring Sessions in Northern Virginia

Spring in Northern Virginia means green fields, cherry blossoms, tulip fields, and soft golden light. You want your outfits to complement that backdrop, not fight it.

Colors that photograph beautifully in spring:

  • Soft neutrals: cream, ivory, tan, oatmeal

  • Earth tones: rust, terracotta, warm brown

  • Muted pastels: sage, dusty blue, blush, soft lavender

  • Classic white or off-white

Colors to avoid:

  • Neon or overly bright colors that draw the eye away from faces (neon shoes can really stand out)

  • I personally stay away from black or use it sparingly. It absorbs the light and can create dull areas of your image.

  • Stark white against very bright backgrounds

  • Large logos or busy graphic prints

  • Camouflage or very dark colors in wooded settings

Layers and Texture Make Photos Interesting

Flat, simple outfits photograph fine. But layered, textured outfits photograph beautifully. Think:

  • Denim jackets over dresses

  • Linen shirts with rolled sleeves

  • Flowy skirts with movement

  • Knit cardigans or light sweaters

  • Overalls, suspenders, fun accessories

Texture gives the eye something interesting to look at and makes images feel warmer and more dimensional.

Let Kids Be Themselves — Even in Styled Sessions

Even in a curated lifestyle session, let your kids wear something they actually like and feel comfortable in. A child who loves their outfit is a child who feels confident and confident kids make for incredible photos.

That said avoid anything with large logos, sports team graphics, or busy cartoon prints. Those tend to date quickly and draw attention away from faces.

Practical Tips for Spring Sessions

A few last things worth knowing:

Shoes matter more than you think. Feet show up in photos more than people expect. Clean, simple shoes that coordinate with the outfits go a long way. Bring layers. Spring in Northern Virginia can be unpredictable mornings can be chilly even when afternoons are warm. Having a light jacket or cardigan for kids means nobody is miserable.

Iron or steam everything the night before. Wrinkled clothes show up in photos. It takes five minutes and makes a real difference.

Skip the brand new outfits if possible. New clothes can feel stiff and uncomfortable. If you do buy something new, have them wear it around the house a few times first.
